Arbor Day in Iran

The tree is a symbol of life, a code for endless fertility, a source of immortality, and a manifestation of absolute truth or existence. In the cultures of different countries, the tree is a symbol of friendship, peace, knowledge, and holiness, and has long held a special place in the ritual, religious, and national beliefs of Iranians. Its presence in the field of literature is not only widespread, but has also given it a special beauty and splendor.

Today, March 15, is Arbor Day, a day that is celebrated in the customs and traditions of Iran and many countries, and each person plants a sapling according to their interests to participate in this celebration.

The beginning of Natural Resources Week

As you know, Natural Resources Week is held from March 5 to 12 (March 15 to 22), and among this date, one of the days is named Arbor Day. Arbor Day is one of the last days of each year when people are encouraged to plant saplings and try to pioneer in giving new life to nature, and this day has been officially and nationally registered in Iran since 1314 AH.

History of Arbor Day in the World

Julius Sterling Morton, an American newspaper editor, first included the celebration and commemoration of Arbor Day in the calendar. He decided to spread his love and interest in trees and, in fact, his message about the value of trees among the people. Accordingly, the Arbor Day celebration was held for the first time on April 10 (21 Farvardin), 1872, in Nebraska. After that, other countries dedicated one day a year to planting trees based on the climate of their region.

Arbor Day in Iran

In ancient Iran, it has long been customary to love nature and protect natural resources, including water, soil, and trees, and Iranians planted trees or various plants in their special celebrations. One of the six stages of creation in the Avesta is considered to be the creation of plants, and in most Iranian arts, such as painting and miniatures, trees and plants have special importance.

We at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences also celebrate this occasion and hold a tree planting ceremony in March with the presence of all colleagues.
