International Event at the Faculty of Psychology and Education
On Saturday, May 10th, the Conference Hall at the Faculty of Psychology and Education, University of Tehran, hosted a highly informative seminar titled "Sharing Experiences on Autism Behavioral Therapy in Turkey." The event featured Dr. Binyamin Birkan, a distinguished expert in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) from Biruni University in Istanbul, who delivered an insightful lecture on the ABA treatment approach for autism. The lecture was warmly received by students, faculty members, and specialists, providing an excellent opportunity for exchanging scientific knowledge and practical experiences related to one of the most effective educational approaches for children with autism.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Birkan provided a comprehensive overview of autism, referencing the definition by Gina Green, a prominent figure in ABA. He described autism as a biologically based syndrome characterized by behavioral extremes, skill deficits, and lack of motivation, which can be significantly improved through carefully organized interactions within physical and social environments. He then elaborated on the scientific framework of ABA, stating that ABA is an evidence-based educational method aimed at improving beneficial behaviors in daily life. In this approach, behaviors are broken down into smaller components, and teaching is conducted through repetition, reinforcement, and careful observation.
A core part of the event was dedicated to sharing real-world intervention cases involving a nine-year-old girl named Talia. Dr. Birkan demonstrated how meticulous, evidence-based planning could lead to meaningful and lasting changes in a child's life. Over time, the team designed a program in which Talia followed different activity steps using pictures. For example, preparing food and setting the table were divided into 47 steps, each represented by a visual. Gradually, the number of pictures was reduced, and ultimately, only a single, comprehensive image remained as a reminder of the entire process. Dr. Birkan emphasized that although Talia never learned to speak or understand numbers, she was able to acquire essential life skills. He stated, “Applied Behavior Analysis helped us transform Talia's and her family's life journey, not merely reduce the symptoms of the disorder.”
The lecture wrapped up with Dr. Birkan answering questions about ABA training, program implementation in Turkey, online training options for families, and its relationship with speech therapy. The event ended with appreciation from Dr. Reza Pourhossein, Head of the Faculty of Psychology and Education, who presented a formal recognition and a token of gratitude to Dr. Birkan and Dr. Saeed Hassanzadeh, honoring their dedication, expertise, and contribution for advancing this essential field.
